MGMT joined by Liam Gallagher cut-out at V Festival
Band cover absent Oasis in Chelmsford

MGMT played a headline tent show at the V Festival tonight (August 23), covering Oasis and playing with a cardboard cut-out of the Manchester legends' singer Liam Gallagher on stage.

The gesture was a tribute to Gallagher's band, who had pulled out of a headline slot on the V Stage tonight due to Liam suffering from laryngitis.

Yesterday (August 22) the Brooklyn act had played at the same time as Oasis and had thanked fans for coming to see them despite the competition.

Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser opened their set with a version of Oasis' 'Live Forever', with the Liam cut-out placed at the front of the stage. The crowd responded with huge cheers, erupting into leaps and hand-waves when MGMT played their own hit 'Kids' next.

As well 'Kids' and similarly well-received older songs 'Time To Pretend' and 'Electric Feel', the band played new songs 'Congratulations', 'Song For Dan Treacy' and 'It's Working'.

The new songs are set for the duo's next album, due out next year.

Keeping chat to a minimum beyond asking the crowd "How're you doin'?", they ended their set with an encore of 'Pieces Of What' and an amped-up version of 'The Handshake', helping to close the final day of the 2009 festival.

okay okay.. IT WAS AMAAAAAZIIIINGGGG RAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I had to endure the Human League, The Streets and then Lady Gaga (not that i minded that cos i love her) to get my spot and i managed to get on the barrier in the middle My friend passed out and got carried out, EVERYONE was passing out, it was SO busy and the crowd was insane, cos Oasis cancelled to obviously more people came to see MGMT..
The Oasis cover was so so good, they were clearly taking the piss cos they were laughing loads, i was expecting Destrokk but this was just so funny, they had a cardboard Liam in the middle of the stage and they were all giggling loads, but they actually sounded so good and the crowd loved it! Andd then they did Kids, second song, which was quite wierd cos it's ALWAYS the encore, but the crowd loved it.. and yeah they did the usual songs, and the three new songs, which sounded amazing. It's Working in particular was reeally good, Andrew was getting really into it haha.
They looked really happy throughout, particularly Andrew who was smiling and laughing at the crowd loads, cos everyone was going mental from start to finish. The whole thing was filmed so HOPEFULLY we'll get some footage soon, even though i'll look like a mug if i'm in it..
And ahh yeah i don't know what else to say, it was just perfect !!! They all looked like beautiful glowing gods!
but i'm now dying, my whole body is bruised and bleeding hahaha

Yeahhhh i want to see the cover videoed, it was so so good, but there's been no mention of them on any of the footage. I recorded it all on my telly anf there's literally just hours of Snow Patrol and Keane and people like fucking NDubz, it's ridiculous

Agree with Polly 100% in her review - A really great gig as always!! Managed to get close to the front, just to the right of the stage which was a good spot, even though we got hit by the odd bottle during the madness before they came on.

The only slightly disappointing thing was the playing Kids so early. As you'd expect at a Festival, a lot of people clearly only wanted to see that song which meant that a few people filtered out halfway through the set. A lot also left before the encore which was a real shame.

However, was more than made up for with the Live Forever cover which was absolutely spot on. I love Oasis personally and actually thought the MGMT cover was better than when i've seen Liam sing it lately!!

Overall, quality show. Not quite in the same league as their set at Reading last year but superb all the same.

Oh, and I also agree with the shocking TV coverage of the Festival. Endless repeats of the SAME friggin' songs by the SAME friggin' bands but not one single MGMT track. Not impressed with Channel 4 for that.

Got to give BBC 10 out of 10 with their coverage of Festivals - They literally show EVERYTHING!!

I really wanna see them live, because I am pretty impressed by how good they've become live, I think Andrew's voice is much better. beh-ah.

And OASIS is soooo OVERRATED.
They're pretty boring in my opinion, and i never never NEVER understood why most of England treats them like icons and heroes.
I do love Liam's quotes though: they have this thing in NME, the 50 funniest Liam Gallagher Quotes and they really made me laugh.
